Sequence Stratigraphy

Sequence Stratigraphy

Sequence stratigraphy is a branch of geology that analyzes rock layers (strata) based on their temporal and spatial relationships within depositional sequences. It focuses on understanding how sedimentary rocks are deposited in response to changes in sea level and sediment supply over time. By identifying repetitive patterns or sequences of sedimentary deposits, sequence stratigraphy helps geologists interpret ancient environments and predict the distribution of reservoirs for oil and gas exploration. This interdisciplinary approach integrates sedimentology, stratigraphy, and paleontology to reconstruct the history of sedimentary basins and their evolution through geological time.
