Palynology

Palynology

Palynology is the study of pollen, spores, and microscopic planktonic organisms found in sedimentary rocks and sediments. It plays a crucial role in understanding past climates, environmental changes, and evolutionary histories of plants and marine organisms. By analyzing fossilized pollen grains and spores preserved in geological formations, palynologists reconstruct ancient ecosystems and contribute to fields such as stratigraphy, paleoecology, and evolutionary biology. This interdisciplinary science also aids in petroleum exploration by indicating the presence of source rocks and providing insights into geological processes over geological timescales. Palynological data helps researchers and geologists piece together the Earth's history and unravel the complex interactions between climate, ecosystems, and geological events.
