Geological Time Scale

Geological Time Scale

The Geological Time Scale (GTS) is a system that organizes Earth's 4.6-billion-year history into a coherent timeline, aiding in the study of geological and biological evolution. It divides time into eons, eras, periods, epochs, and ages. The GTS begins with the Hadean Eon, characterized by Earth's formation, followed by the Archean and Proterozoic eons, marking the emergence of early life. The Phanerozoic Eon, starting around 541 million years ago, is the most recent and includes three eras: Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. Each era is marked by significant geological and biological events, such as the Cambrian Explosion and the extinction of the dinosaurs. The GTS is essential for understanding Earth's history, climate changes, and the development of life.
